Information on the Districts of Matsumoto Region.

At the foot of the magnificent Northern Alps on its west lie the Matsumoto plains.
Its 4 districts consisting of 9 cities, towns and villages continue to attract visitors to their various unique features.


This page introduces you to the scenery, culture, hot springs and art galleries of each area along with their own unique cuisines, traditional arts and crafts.

Matsumoto Area has many great sites to visit. Matsumoto Castle is a 'National Treasure' and an icon of the city. To the east is the Utsukushigahara Plateau with its many beautiful alpine species and amazing scenic views across the Matsumoto plains to the Japanese Alps in the west.
With a dozen odd hot springs (Onsen) to bathe in and a range of fine Sake (rice wine) to sample there is much to entice a traveller. Also various events are held each month providing interest throughout the year.

With its imposing Mountain backdrop the tranquil fields, quaint farmhouses and inspiring scenery of Azumino is a wonderful place to take time out and relax. Enjoy soaking in this area or in its famous Onsens (hot springs) well known for its Art and Museums. Vist a Wasabi plantation or a local Beer Brewery; each dependent on pristine mountain streams for their quality.

Omi Village still retains the feel of a place once used by pilgrim travellers on their way to Zenkoji Temple in Nagano.
Ikusaka village also abounds with fruit and produce throughout the year. Chikuhoku Village has a historic road Shrine and a natural hotspring to soothe the weary traveller.
This district offers a perfect place for rest and to revitalise.

This district flows westward from the place where Shiojiri city developed as a travel hub. It's rich soil produces fruit, grapes, watermelons and other highland leaf vegetables such as lettuces and Chinese and Western cabbages etc.
This area is blessed with natures bounty and plentiful opportunities for recreation in the great outdoors.
